The School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering under the Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, with the Department of Public Hygiene Engineering under the above-mentioned university as its predecessor in 1956 when four universities were incorporated, establishing a Heating and Aeration Specialty and a Water Supply and Drainage Specialty, the earliest endeavor in the northwest China. In 1977 the university set up its Environmental Engineering Specialty, also the earliest in China. In 1999 it set up the Environmental Science Specialty. At present, the school has the only environmental specialty the state’s key subject among twelve provinces in northwest China and two key subjects at the provincial level; it has one training program for doctors of Class A subject, five training programs for doctors of Class B subject, and two scientific research stations for post-doctors; at the same time, it has three subjects with the state-level characteristic and the provincial top brand; it has a state-level international science & technology cooperation center,a state-level experiment & teaching demonstration center, a key laboratory for environmental engineering in Shaanxi Province, and a Key Laboratory of Northwest Water Resource, Environment and Ecology under the Ministry of Education; it has one innovation group selected in the Development & Planning for the Yangtze River scholars under the Ministry of Education. The school has presided over and completed 38 teaching reform programs sponsored by the province and the above-said ministry, obtaining 3 second prizes for state-level teaching achievements and 1 special prize, six first prizes and 12 prizes for ministry –or- provincial level teaching achievements. It has presided over 480 state-level research programs such as the National Water Pollution Control Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. 279 authorized patents for invention and 73 prizes for national and provincial level including the National Science and Technology Progress Awards and National Technology Invention Awards were received.

         The school has a registered teaching staff of 116, including 27 professors, 25 associate professors, enrolling 330 undergraduates, 200 graduates and 20 doctoral students per year. Up till now, it has turned out 14,000 graduates as cumulative figure, whose employment proportion has been stabilized always at 95% and above. Important achievements have been made for the country’s economic reconstruction and social advance.
